The role of a District Chief at a fire scene is very similar to being the CEO of a large corporation. Listen in as one of our District Chiefs assumes command of a working fire and manages his assets (firefighters, fire apparatus and local utility representatives) during their attack on the fire, the search for occupants and the clean up afterwards.
You’ll command decisions being made instantaneously and firmly as the various members of this quickly developed team work together to accomplish their goals.
You’ll soon realize that the District Chief doesn’t have the luxuries that a CEO has such as a Board of Directors to plan with. Instead, he is faced with an ongoing variety of tactical, strategic and resource decisions all requiring an immediate decision and the issuing of firm, clear orders.
This audio recording of a fire at the corner of Wyandotte Street and Gladstone Avenue serves as a reminder of the training, character and professionalism of our local Fire Services.
Please listen and enjoy this introduction to “Command and Control of a Working Fire”. The audio recording is taken directly from the actual dispatch tape.
