Our Policy
Install smoke alarms - it's the law. The Ontario Fire Code requires that every home have working smoke alarms. Windsor Fire & Rescue Services will install smoke alarms, free of charge for a resident homeowner who cannot afford them. Landlords are responsible to provide smoke alarms and batteries for smoke alarms in their rental properties.

Background
In 1995 Windsor Fire & Rescue Services initiated its first Smoke Alarm Giveaway program in the City's west end. There had been numerous fire fatalities in the area prior to this initiative. As a result of the giveaway, fire loss in that area dropped by 70% and there were no fire fatalities. With such great results the department has expanded this program by targeting various high-risk areas throughout the city. We now carry smoke alarms on all our fire apparatus and install them in homes where people may not be able to afford them. We are able to do this because of the great partnerships we have established with private enterprise as well as the many service clubs that help us out.
