Equipment

The Scott AP 50, high pressure breathing apparatus is provided and must be worn by all participants. Competitors may use their own face piece. Competitors must finish the event without running out of air. All competitors must compete in their own protective equipment. All turnout gear, including boots must be labeled NFPA approved for structural firefighting consistent with NFPA 1500. Inspectors will inspect all gear prior to participation and make official rulings on all questions regarding turnout gear. Their decisions are final.

Articles of turnout gear and SCBA must not be removed or lost during the competition. If dropped, they must be retrieved and correctly replaced by the competitor before continuing. A competitor is disqualified for violation.

The Competition

Each competitor begins the course at the command of the starter. Ready on the Red... Ready on the Blue...Set.  An audible sound will start each heat. Each event must be performed in the order specified below. Running is permitted but the walk path delineators must not be knocked over. A 5 second penalty is assessed for any infraction.  To see the course click here.

Tag Team Relay

The Team Relay will consist of 3 to 5 people sharing the five evolutions of the Firefighter Combat Challenge. Requirements for gear (except no SCBA facepiece) are the same. The tasks may be organized for teams with less than 5 individuals: a member may perform more than one task; however, the first person is required to reset the donut and carry the highrise pack back to the bottom of the tower. The donut must not be lowered until the second person has exited the tower. A flashlight will be used as the team baton and must be in the possession of the team member preforming the task. After team members have completed an evolution they must assemble at the foot of the dummy, unless they are required to do an additional evolution.

Competition

Competitors without hands-on experience in the Challenge tend to underestimate the arduous nature of the event and the effects it can have on them physically. To help minimise negative effects, remember there is no substitute for training. Please adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Drink plenty of water 1 to 2 hours prior to the event.
  2. Completely avoid the consumption of alcohol for at least 48 hours prior to the event.
  3. Avoid the use of any over-the-counter medication for 48 hours. In particular, you should avoid all aspirin and aspirin-containing products as well as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents like Advil, Nuprin, Motrin, Medipren, and Midol, to name a few. In addition, you should avoid products containing acetaminophen (Tylenol), and decongestants, cold pills, and diuretics.
  4. Amphetamines, ephedrine, and related substances should be completely avoided. Illegal drugs, of course, are exactly that. We run a drug-free competition and expect all competitors to acknowledge this fact by executing the participation form.
  5. Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours prior to the event.
